Even as security concerns during the recently-organised BRICS Summit warranted a virtual lockdown on it, a lone burglar (mis)used a seemingly innocuous service ladder to burgle two adjacent properties in central Delhi's Khan Market in the dead of night on Thursday.
Ironically, not even a single one of the two-dozen colour screen-enabled CCTV camera installed across the posh market, which was apparently visited by Chinese President Hu Jintao hours before the incident, could capture a glimpse of the assailant's face.
"The burglar seems to have gained entry by climbing a ladder and breaking a glass panel installed above a restaurant located opposite the Subhramania Bharati Marg and then gained entry to a doctor's clinic located adjacent to it by breaking through a glass door," said a senior police officer.
KC Dwivedi, additional CP (New Delhi) confirmed the twin break-ins had occurred on March 29; the day the Capital hosted four heads of state at the BRICS Summit being held at the Taj Palace Hotel on the Sardar Patel Marg, not very far away from the scene of the crime.
While the burglar succeeded in stealing over Rs 45,000 from his first stops, Café Turtle and an adjacent book shop, he then, police said, went to the terrace and jumped on to the adjacent terrace to gain entry into the clinic.
"He broke into our clinic by breaking through a glass door on the top floor and probably took the same route to escape," said Dr. Aman Sharma, who has personally been practising there for more than half a decade. Dr. Sharma said more or less the same amount was stolen from the clinic, too.
Police said they have recovered fingerprints from the spot and suspect the burglar escaped identification by sleeping at a shop in the area. Investigations are underway.
