Kalashnikov-wielding, swift-kicking women commandos will soon guard the country's most sensitive airport.
Ten women personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) are undergoing commando training for posting at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.
This will be the first team of women commandos at the airport. Women security personnel are mainly deployed for frisking female passengers.
Apart from Israel - where one-third of Israeli Defence Force soldiers and half the officers are women - not many countries have women as commandos as part of their security culture. Interestingly, Pakistan has female commandos at its airports.
"Women are mostly hired out of compulsion because we need them to frisk women. But why should that be? We have started thinking differently and training them to do the job that our male commandos are doing," said a senior CISF official requesting anonymity.
The commandos will be able to handle latest weapons such as AK-47s, self-loading rifles (SLRs), MP5 and Glock pistols.
"We are also training them in unarmed combat. We expect them to do any job from patrolling to responding to an emergency. This training will increase their confidence," the official said.
At the Delhi Metro, CISF already has a team of women commandos, but for the first time, they will be posted at the airport. The commandos will be part of Quick Reaction Teams.
CISF has a strength of 4,500 at the Delhi airport of which around 600 are women.
"We would like to increase the strength and put them in anti-hijack and other such units. We will soon send another batch for the training," the official said.
