The recently refurbished Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has ranked sixth in the world for the year 2011 in terms of quality of services provided by the Airport Councils International.
Among the mid-segment airports, which cater to 25-40 million passengers per annum, the IGIA has ranked second, while Incheon airport of South Korea acquired the first position.
In 2011, 35 million passengers pass through IGIA, including 10 million international passengers.
Interestingly, Incheon International Airport has been named the best airport worldwide for the seventh consecutive year for overall customer satisfaction.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the private operator managing the international airport, said the Delhi airport has improved tremendously in the past five years since the management was transferred to them.
“The IGIA has come a long way in the last five years since we took over,” DIAL’s chief executive officer I Prabhakara Rao said.
“From a rank beyond 100 and airport service quality score of just 3.02 in the year 2007, the Indira Gandhi International Airport has now become the sixth best airport across all categories with a score of 4.72,” a DIAL spokesperson said.
DIAL officials said the IGIA has outshined Singapore's Changi and Hong Kong airports, which were ranked ahead of India along with Korea's Incheon international in 2010 in 25-40 million MPPA category.
The performance of airports is gauged in 32 different parameters.
Airports Council International is the only global trade representative of airports, with 1,650 airports in 179 countries and territories. The airport service quality survey results are announced every year in February and are reflect the kind of services the airports offer to customers.
