Teachers at 160 government-run primary and junior schools in Gautam Buddha Nagar would soon be testing the eyesight of the students besides their regular duties.
For this they are being trained and would soon be provided with necessary charts and equipment.
“It has been experienced that several students could not concentrate on studies as they couldn’t clearly see the letters on the blackboard. This was due to poor eyesight which aggravated further as students ignored it,” said Chief Medical Officer ML Mishra.
Talking to Hindustan Times, he said, “Teachers would be trained to conduct eye sight tests in the school itself. The motive is to detect eyesight problems in students at an early stage.”
“Besides testing eyesight, teams of doctors would also conduct regular physical and mental health check ups. A regular health report card would be maintained for each student. Even the parents would be called and briefed about balanced diet and ways to keep children fit and healthy,” he added.
Basic Education Officer Dharamvir Singh said, “The district has 455 primary and 208 junior schools. A school health scheme would be implemented in phases. In the first phase 160 schools have been identified under the health scheme.”
He said schools have been asked to send the names of the teachers to be trained.
