Devender Kumar did what any Indian brother would do for his sister. He tried to give her the best wedding he could afford. He gave the groom’s family several things — from gold, refrigerator, washing machine to clothes and utensils. But none of these impressed the groom’s family. They wanted a Maruti Alto and allegedly threatened to call off the wedding if they weren’t given that in dowry.
Left with no other option just hours before the wedding, Devender called the police and got the groom’s mother arrested.
The incident happened two days ago at Nizampur, Kanjhawala, in Outer Delhi. The arrested has been identified as Kamala Devi (52), widow of a junior engineer with MTNL.
According to the police, the son of the accused, Ajay, was to marry Devender’s sister on May 23. But the groom’s family demanded a car, in addition to the several items that Devender had already given them. “Devender had gone to Ajay’s house hours before the wedding after he got a call from them,” said Chhaya Sharma, Deputi Commissioner of Police (Outer). “The groom’s family told him that the wedding would take place only if their demand of a car would be fulfilled.”
Devender, who had already spent lakhs on wedding arrangement, told them his family wasn’t in the financial position to buy a car and fulfil their demand, Sharma said.
“Kamla then refused to go ahead with the wedding. Even Ajay did not pay any heed to Devender’s requests,” Sharma added.
It was then that Devender lodged a complaint with the police. His statement was recorded, in which he claimed that the engagement occurred a day before and his family had handed over various articles to Ajay’s family.
After recording his statement arrested Kamala under Dowry Prohibition Act, said Sharma.
