Sailesh Yadav, an IPS officer who wants to do a Ph D in forensic medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), failed to get any marks in the qualifying interview, but acting director Dr T.D. Dogra has cried foul practices and backed his candidature.
Faculty members of the department of forensic medicine Dr R.K. Sharma and Dr Sudhir Gupta had both given Yadav “zero” and declared him “unfit” on January 24. That very day, Dr Dogra, who is also the head of forensic medicine, shot off a letter to the sub-dean, examination, challenging the rejection and accusing the professors of “biased, prejudiced and unfair attitude”.
In his letter, Dr Dogra wrote: “On start, I interviewed the candidate and he gave answers satisfactorily. Answers to the questions of Dr R.K. Sharma and Dr Sudhir Gupta were also to my knowledge satisfactory.”
On their part, the interview team said the candidate was clueless about the basics of science. “We found that he is not aware of medical knowledge as he has no educational background in medical sciences. He could not answer basic questions after which we found him unfit to pursue PhD in forensic medicine,” they wrote to the subdean, examinations.
Yadav is a history, culture and archaeology graduate and does not qualify for a PhD programme at AIIMS, for which the requisite degrees are MBBS, science or allied sciences. The AIIMS faculty alleged that Yadav qualified for the written exam because the paper was leaked. They have asked for an inquiry into this.
The matter will now be decided at the next academic committee meeting at AIIMS on February 18.
Yadav who is an IPS officer of 1994 batch of Tamil Nadu cadre, is on deputation at AIIMS.
