It’s picnic time at DDA
Delhi Police might be burning the midnight oil probing alleged irregularities in DDA flat allotments for the past month or so, but for the 200 odd staffers in DDA’s housing department, the investigations seem to be a boon, reports Moushumi Das Gupta.delhi Updated: Jan 31, 2009 00:12 IST
Delhi Police might be burning the midnight oil probing alleged irregularities in DDA flat allotments for the past month or so, but for the 200 odd staffers in DDA’s housing department, the investigations seem to be a boon.
With Delhi Police’s Economic Offence Wing (EOW) — which is probing the case — taking away the computer server containing all data related to housing in Delhi as also five dozen files, work has literally come to a standstill.
It might be an unlikely fallout of the alleged scam, but nobody seems to be complaining. “It does not happen everyday. As it is we are overburdened with work, clearing stackfull of files throughout the day. But we are taking it easy now,” said a housing department official who did not want to be named.
While senior officials of the housing department are busy responding to the police queries related to the housing scheme, for the junior staff it’s picnic time. Clerks loitering around puffing beedis are a familiar sight now. Even junior-level officials are occasionally seen lazing around.
“The majority of housing related data has been digitised. With the server and many files being taken away we do not have access to information we need to process the files. Unless they are returned, we can’t do much, said another official.
The employees may be enjoying the break, but not everyone is happy. The department, infamous for delaying work, has stopped processing routine housing-related work. “I have been trying to get a conversion deed executed for the past two months. But every time they come up with some excuse to delay it,” said Seema Joshi (name changed).
BJP’s new criteria
Former Union minister and BJP national general secretary Vijay Goel has demanded that in future any DDA housing scheme be open only for residents of Delhi or those working in the NCR.
