The next time you think about sneaking into a corner to use your mobile phone in Jamia Millia Islamia's Dr Zakir Husain Library, think again.
The library, which had already put up sign boards across its premises stating that a fine of Rs 100 would be imposed on students if their phones were found to be ringing, has decided to introduce greater punitive measures to curb the use of mobile phones within the library vicinity.
"We had begun by issuing warnings verbally to students that mobile phone usage within the reading room or any other area would result in a fine. Even though, Rs 100 is a very small amount for students, it had begun acting as a deterrent against the use of phones," said Gayas Makhdumi, librarian, Jamia Millia Islamia.
However, authorities feel that students still manage to use their phones within the library premises. As a counter measure, library authorities are taking steps to prevent the usage of mobile phones, altogether, in the new library building, as a means of spreading awareness among students and faculty, alike.
"We will implement a rule wherein we will confiscate the identity cards of the students if they are found using their phones within the library premises," added Makhdumi.
