The student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) who was attacked by her classmate on the campus on July 31 was discharged from Safdarjung Hospital on Monday.
“We discharged her after proper observation. She is still in a state of post-traumatic amnesia (a state of memory loss), but she has recovered a lot,” Dr Karam Chand, head of neurosurgery department at the hospital, said. “She can recognise her family members, but sometimes she forgets a few things. It will take some more time to get her back to normal.”
The 22-year-old woman will require a surgery in the skull after six to 12 months for filling up the hollow part in her brain, which was caused due to removal of small pieces of bones. According to Dr Chand, a small bone on her skull, which was broken into pieces due to a violent strike, was taken out to avoid infection.
“She might require cranioplasty (surgical repair of a defect or deformity of a skull) after sometime,” he said. “Just to avoid infection, the pieces of bones were removed from her brain. We are thinking of repairing it after she gets little better.”
She boarded the train to Muzaffarpur on Monday evening with her father and two sisters. “She is much better now. She is talking, but there is a little bit of irritation. She is also eating everything but it’ll take some time for her to recover fully,” said her brother. “The doctor said she will need another surgery after six months or one year.”
The woman was attacked with an axe by Akash Kumar on the JNU campus, leading to deep injuries on her skull that was broken due to the force with which she was hit. He brain cover was damaged, there were stab wounds in the abdomen and her wrist was fractured. Kumar, who committed suicide by consuming pesticide, was declared dead at AIIMS Trauma Centre.
