After former telecom minister A Raja, it was DMK MP Kanimozhi's turn to drag Prime Minister Manmohan Singh into the 2G spectrum scam. She has made the PM a defence witness in the scam trial.
Kanimozhi said the PM had addressed the Parliament stating there was no loss to the exchequer following the allocation of spectrum licences.
Kanimozhi's counsel, senior advocate Sushil Kumar, appearing before special CBI judge OP Saini said, "If the trial goes on (against her), I would summon the Prime Minister as a witness". He added: "The PM, the then finance minister (P Chidambaram) and the present telecom minister (Kapil Sibal) have told the House, ie the people of India, that no loss has been caused."
Kumar accused former telecom minister A Raja of conspiring with the other accused in the 2G-spectrum scam. He told the court that the CBI's estimated loss to the exchequer was due to the omission and commission of the acts of the accused, including Raja.
Interestingly, Kumar is defence counsel for both Raja and Kanimozhi.
Kanimozhi termed her prosecution as "frivolous and malicious", accusing the CBI of suppressing the fact that she was a lawmaker and sanction of the Rajya Sabha chairman was required to try her in 2G scam.
Taking a dig at CBI, Kumar said, "But in a lighter vein, I would like to make a comment, the word CBI came into being on April 1, 1963. That is Fools Day. Which is why they (CBI) do such wonders. CBI interrogates a sitting MP. She tells them she is an MP yet CBI has the courage to say that she is a private person in the chargesheet," he said.
Her counsel also rubbished the CAG report estimating a presumptive loss of Rs1.76 lakh crore in the 2G spectrum allocation scam and CBI's computation of Rs30,984 crore loss.
