BJP veteran LK Advani’s demand to end the government’s role in appointing Election Commissioners and CAG found support among UPA allies as well as other opposition quarters on Tuesday.
Advani had written to the PM last week suggesting a collegium for appointments in these constitutional bodies.
Even as the Congress made it clear the issue is not on their agenda, its ally DMK came in support of Advani’s proposal.
“I am in agreement with the contents in the letter (of Advani). It cannot be ignored just because it is the opposition view,” the DMK patriarch wrote in party mouthpiece ‘Murasoli’.
The Left parties also favours the idea floated by Advani. CPM’s politburo member Sitaram Yechuri said his party agreed that a collegium is required for appointments of Election Commissioners and the CAG on the pattern of the CVC.
CPI’s leader in Lok Sabha Gurudas Dasgupta also wrote letters to all chief ministers—including Gujarat’s Narendra Modi and Left’s rival Mamata Banerjee — asking them to build up pressure on the Centre.
On Monday, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, however, made it clear that the government has no plans to change the appointment process.
“In a democracy, anyone can give suggestions about any issue. But there is a process laid down in our constitution,” he said after the Congress Working Committee meeting when asked about Advani’s proposal.
Karunanidhi, however, hoped that that the Centre would give importance to it.
