The Congress has rehabilitated Kerala strongman K Karunakaran in the party’s highest decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee, as a permanent invitee.
Along with this the AICC has appointed coordinators who will work in tandem with eight of the 17 AICC general secretaries and state in-charges to give focussed attention to the states they are supposed to handle. “There will be no hierarchy. There is no question of who is above or below,” said a Congress leader amid confusion of what their role will be.
With the AICC focusing on district-level campaigns during elections, these leaders will divide the work among themselves. Some quarters apprehend this may create parallel centres of power in the faction-ridden party at the state levels.
