If you want to vote in the coming Lok Sabha elections in Delhi on April 10, you have only a week to enrol yourself in the electoral list.
Having a voter identification card won’t be enough to exercise your franchise. Residents can vote only if their names figure in the voter list, the office of the chief electoral officer (CEO) said on Wednesday.
To ensure maximum voters are enlisted for the parliamentary elections, the CEO office will hold special camps on Sunday across the city.
“We will set up special camps across the city to help people check their names in the voters’ list. In case their names are missing, they can get it added as booth level officers will be there to assist them fill up form 6,” said Vijay Dev, chief electoral officer, Delhi.
The registration process, which can be done either online or through the special camps or by visiting the voter registration offices across the city, will be open till March 12.
Till January 31, there were over 1.2 crore electors — 66.85 crore men and 53.7 crore women and 634 others), the CEO office said. There has been an increase of 128, 424 electors since the assembly elections in December 2013.
But the number of young voters has come down. In the 2013 assembly elections, there were 4.05 lakh young voters (18-19 years), but the number stands at 226, 833 on January 31, about 2 per cent of the total electors.
“The number has definitely come down compared to last year as many names get deleted when youngsters turn 20. We are hoping that the number will increase in the coming few days. Of the 1.28 lakh new people who have registered, a huge chunk are young voters,” said Dev.
Buoyed by the response to the model polling stations time during the assembly elections, the poll office plans to set up 70 such stations this time, as HT has already reported.
“We want to make voting a pleasant experience and hence we have decided to set up 70 model polling stations,” said Dev.
