The Lok Sabha on Friday paid homage to the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese cities hit by atom bombs 65 years ago.
As soon as the House met for the day, Speaker Meira Kumar read out a statement recalling the "man-made catastrophe" on August six and nine, 1945 in which thousands of innocent lives were lost and millions more injured and crippled for life.
"On this occasion, let us reiterate our pledge to make earnest endeavours for elimination of all weapons of mass destruction and to abjure violence in all forms," Kumar said.
The House then observed silence in memory of the dead.
