A number of social organisations on Tuesday alleged that women in Delhi continued to face sexual harassment while using public transport and demanded a better security system.
In a meeting with Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung — that was called to review women security and safety issues — the NGOs were asked to identify crime-prone areas and other places where rowdy elements gather.
Women groups were asked to widely publicise the present laws in place to curb such menace.
According to senior officials, women groups have urged the Lt Governor to take measures to crack down on incidents of sexual harassment occurring in public transport. Members of women’s safety groups and those working for the welfare of women attended the meeting.
“Wider publicity must be given to the laws which have been amended recently to met out harsher punishment to the offenders. Fear of law must be generated among the offenders by publicity campaign and prompt police action on the ground,” said Lieutenant Governor Jung.
