A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP from Lucknow, also one of the richest candidates in the last Lok Sabha polls, has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh batting for TS Darbari.
Darbari was sacked by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) on charges of alleged irregularity of funds.
BSP MP Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta, also the president of Uttar Pradesh Olympic Association wrote, "Certain officials of OC in order to divert the attention from their corrupt activities involving contracts worth thousands of crores, highlighted certain allegation through the media regarding a contract worth R2 crore only (sic.)."
When contacted, Gupta said, "The main culprits are being shielded. I decided to write the letter when I learnt from sources that there is corruption involved at the highest level."
Gupta, who was earlier with the Indian National Congress, joined Mayawati's BSP in 2008. He is also the chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee (Industry).
Darbari was sacked over alleged irregularities of payments worth lakhs of pounds to the UK-based AM Films that was hired to provide "services" during the Queens Baton Relay launch in London in 2009.
The letter dated October 29, read, "Mr Darbari's role was only restricted to ceremonial, protocol and coordination with the government agencies without any financial transaction, tender process."
The letter added: "It is most unfortunate that the empowered committee of the three members was constituted by VK Verma, who is also involved in corruption. But none of these officers have been suspended nor terminated. Instead another officer TS Darbari who was not even a member of the committee and had no access to the finances has been made a scapegoat."
