Delhi police have arrested a 35-year-old man on Monday for the murder of his ex-wife last year. His associate Sunil Kumar was also arrested.
Police said Deepak Gupta called his ex-wife on their wedding anniversary last year and asked her to meet him. He then took her to Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh and strangled her with a belt.
"Gupta had planned to kill his ex-wife. On November 29 last year, on the day of their marriage anniversary, he called his wife Manjarai Gupta to Japanese Park in Rohini on the pretext of meeting her. When she arrived, Gupta and Kumar took her in a borrowed Maruti WagonR car to visit a Jain temple in Bada Gaon, Baghpat, UP," Ashok Chand, DCP (crime) said.
Police said after visiting the temple on their way back Gupta stopped the car at an isolated stretch and both strangled her with a belt.
"Then they dumped her body in the sugarcane field and crushed her face with a heavy stone," Chand added. Police said Gupta and Kumar were arrested after a tip-off and during interrogation, they confessed to the crime.
Police said Gupta had started abusing and physically assaulting his wife a few years after the marriage. This led to their divorce in May 2011. The woman then started living in Vijay Vihar in Delhi with a relative of her husband.
"Gupta decided to kill her as he didn't like the fact that she was living with his relative," Chand added.
Police said though they have questioned Gupta's friend from whom he had borrowed the car but he won't be held accountable in this case.
