A 25-year-old man died after falling into a borewell in the capital’s Rohini area in a suspected case of suicide, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at Vishram Chowk at the intersection of Sector 4 and Sector 5 in outer Delhi. The borewell was dug by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB).
Though police managed to retrieve the body last night the man was yet to be identified.
Several children have died in different parts of the country in recent times after accidentally falling into open bore wells, prompting state governments to invoke different sections of law to punish offenders who leave the wells open.
However, incidents of adults falling into such wells accidentally are rare.
Police studied CCTV footage to ascertain that the man deliberately fell into the 30-feet well, dug by DJB as part of a sewage project.
“It appears that the man willingly walked into the well. CCTV footage accessed by us shows him going towards the well. The footage is, however, not too clear and we have called in technicians to give us a better picture. Prima facie we are treating it as a case of suicide,” a senior police officer said.
The official quoted local residents as saying that they had asked the DJB to cover up the well after work but the board allegedly did not take note.
“Whether a case of negligence will be registered against DJB or not is a matter of investigation,” the officer added.
