A Delhi Police constable was allegedly hit and dragged to more than 200 metres by a car driver when he sought an explanation from the latter for using tinted glasses and a fake police logo on his car.
According to police, the accused driver, who claimed to be the son of an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) in the crime branch, misbehaved with the constable and assaulted him after he was asked to follow him to Rajender Nagar police station.
Constable Manoj Kumar, who suffered multiple injuries in the Saturday incident, is posted at Rajender Nagar police station. A case has been registered against Adesh Kumar, a resident of Nangloi. His Santro car was confiscated. Police said Kumar works in a private company and is related to the crime branch official whom he claimed to be his father.
Around 6pm on Saturday, the constable was on patrolling duty on Shankar Road when he spotted the car with tinted glasses parked by the roadside.
"The constable asked the driver about the prohibited tinted glasses and a police logo on the windshield. The driver said the car belonged to his father who is an ACP in the crime branch. The constable asked for for his father's mobile number but the latter refused saying it’s confidential. The constable got suspicious and asked for his driving licence and other papers, which the driver failed to furnish," said a senior police officer.
Kumar then tried to flee but instead hit the constable. "The accused dragged the officer for over 200 metres before hitting the brakes. The constable fell on the road. The car then moved towards Pusa Road but the constable caught him at the traffic signal. The accused got out of his car and started hitting the constable. Some passersby saw this and overpowered him.”
