A ‘curfew-like’ situation prevailed in northeast Delhi’s Seelampur after a 30-year-old man was shot dead by bike-borne assailants on Wednesday evening. The incident triggered tension between two communities, who threw stones at each other and even tried to set a house on fire.
The deceased has been identified as Dinesh Kumar, a ‘bad character’ who ran a grocery shop at his J-52, Seelampur house.
According to the police, a woman, Noor Bi, also suffered bullet injuries when the assailants opened indiscriminate fire. She is undergoing treatment at GTB hospital and her condition is stated to be stable.
A police officer said that after the incident, local traders in the main market of Seelampur downed their shutters.
Within minutes, a group of people from a particular community started vandalising the shops in the market over the killing of Kumar, which triggered clashes in the area.
“We have identified the assailants behind the killing. They will be arrested soon. Kumar was a history-sheeter and there were several criminal cases against him. We are probing personal rivalry angle in the case,” said Sanjay Kumar Jain, DCP (northeast).
