A 38-year-old undertrial was gunned down by two people outside gate number 3 of Rohini court on Saturday morning. Delhi Police have apprehended one of the shooters in the case.
The deceased, Rajesh, was reportedly a member of the Neeraj Bawana gang and was wanted in more than 16 cases of robbery, murder and dacoity. He was arrested in December last year in a murder case in Agra, and was lodged in Jhajjar jail since then.
On Saturday, Haryana Police was taking Rajesh to the Rohini court for a hearing. As soon as he got down from the Bolero, a police vehicle, one of the two men on a motorbike opened fire at him with a country-made pistol. Eyewitnesses said that Rajesh ducked to save himself but a bullet hit his shoulder and pierced through the chest, following which he collapsed. Police said he died on the way to the hospital.
During questioning, the nabbed shooter, Mohit, told police that he did not know Rajesh personally, but was paid to kill him. Mohit said that his friend, Satish, helped him identify Rajesh, and his job was just to open fire on him. According to police, the two men had been waiting outside the court for Rajesh to arrive.
After they opened fire, the local police rushed the injured man to a hospital, while the Haryana Police chased the two men. The policemen guarding the court were also alerted and they ran to catch the shooters. They managed to nab Mohit from outside gate number 5. After being caught, he tried to shoot at the cops using another pistol but the weapon failed to go off.
“Rajesh, a notorious criminal, was shot dead outside Rohini court while he was being brought by Haryana Police. An accused, Mohit, has been arrested and a case of murder has been registered. We suspect it to be a case of personal enmity. We are probing all angles in the case,” said deputy commissioner of police, Rohini, Rishi Pal said.
He added, “When the policemen tried to catch the shooter, he opened fire but his weapon jammed. We have recovered two weapons and some live rounds from his possession and have taken him into custody to identify his associate Satish, who managed to flee,” he added.
Investigations revealed that Mohit and Satish had carried out a recce of the court premises thrice earlier to see the positioning of the cops. They even practiced fleeing the area on the bike. On Saturday, sources said that the two followed the police vehicle carrying Rajesh from Haryana.
