The Delhi government appointed Walia committee has finally worked out a broad plan to divide the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
In its second meeting on the issue, the committee agreed to divide the civic body in to five smaller units.
Sources said the committee has also agreed to decrease the population per municipal ward from the existing 50,000 to 40,000. Sources said this would result in increase in number of municipal wards in each assembly segment from 4 to 6. The total number of wards under the five civic bodies would also increase from 270 to 398.
According to sources, the delimitation of municipal wards was last done in 2006. "It was based on population census of 2001. The committee has now decided to have a relook at the population covered under each ward," said an official privy to the meeting.
Sources said the committee has asked former election officer of Delhi SP Marwah to come up with a report on the new possible boundaries of each ward. Marwah is likely to present his report on March 31, sources said.
