Cars parked inside the Asaf Ali Road underground parking for the past one decade will soon be put to auction by the MCD to create more parking space.
After making all efforts to reach out to the owners of these vehicles, the MCD will soon be coming up with a public notice to auction the 237-odd vehicles.
The civic agency claims that the owners do not come forward to reclaim their vehicles as their parking dues are much more than the market price of the cars.
“These vehicles have eaten up half of the parking space. We have finally decided to put them to auction. A reserve price for that will be fixed,” said a senior MCD official.
This parking lot caters to the Walled City and Central Delhi, which has been reeling under acute parking shortage. The manager of the Asaf Ali road parking claims that many car owners who had parked their cars here have left India.
However, the entire process to auction these vehicles will not be an easy task. The civic agency had written to the transport department asking them the address of the car owners. “We got addresses of at least 90 of them. When our staff contacted them, nine said that they had been parking their cars daily in the lot and had not abandoned them. To ensure that we don’t face any legal problem later on, the department is contacting each of the owners whose contact details have been provided,” added the official.
The parking contractor of the lot, has been facing huge losses since years, and has written several times to the MCD. “The owners or relatives of owners of these vehicles can come and prove the ownership. They should pay the parking charges and take away the vehicles within 15 days of the issuance of the public notice, failing which we will put them to auction,” added the official.
