A number of people who had been carrying out illegal construction in the city taking advantage of the model code of conduct due to the MCD elections will soon be in for a rude shock.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is all set to start a demolition and sealing drive from Monday. The campaign against illegal construction will start from south and central zone of the MCD.
"A lot of people had carried out construction illegally taking advantage of the MCD elections. All our staff was busy in the preparations for the MCD elections and hence the demolition activities were on a hold. We will resume the sealing and demolition drive from Monday," said a senior MCD official.
The civic agency will also launch a sealing drive, cracking the whip on traders who have failed to deposit conversion charges. Hundreds of shops in plush markets such as Hauz Khas, Green Park, South Extension, Kalkaji, Satya Niketan, Aurobindo Marg, Malviya Nagar, Saket, Lajpat Nagar, among others are under the threat of being sealed.
Traders operating from these areas are supposed to pay conversion charges to the MCD for continuing commercial activity in these areas.
So far, 500-odd sealing notices have been served to shops in south zone while 400 such notices had been issued to commercial establishments falling under the central zone. If the owners fail to deposit conversion charges, the building department will seal their property.
"We have been sending notices to traders in south and central zone and will continue throughout the week," said a senior MCD official.
