Next time the Metro train you are travelling in stops for longer than normal at a particular station, blame it on men barging into the reserved coach for women.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials believe most of the time Metro gets delayed because men insist on travelling in reserved coaches for women.
Although there is space (at least to stand) in that coach, women do not allow the train to move unless men are removed from their compartment, leading to delays.
Women passengers often stop the train from moving unless the male passengers vacate the coach. This results in delays, this is what DMRC chief Elavattupil Sreedharan told Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday, said a highly placed source present in the meeting.
A senior DMRC official confirmed that a number of delays in the Metro network can be attributed to this problem.
Recently given yet another extension as managing director of DMRC, this time till December 2011, Sreedharan met the chief minister, transport minister Arvinder Singh and senior Delhi government officials at Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday.
Sources said Dikshit expressed concern over reports of frequent delays and technical glitches in the Metro system and asked Sreedharan to closely monitor the functioning of Metro to iron out problems.
According to sources, Sreedharan also complained about lack of cleanliness around Metro stations and under the elevated track. Sources said he complained that the problem of littering around Metro stations also results in snags, including malfunctioning of escalators, lifts and other electronic equipment at the stations.
Senior DMRC officials said vendors running shops around Metro stations often litter the place with polybags and other garbage, which find their way to the Metro stations and get stuck in lifts and escalators.
“Sreedharan has suggested that the area around Metro stations should be handed over to the DMRC for maintenance," the source said.
At present, the responsibility of maintaining areas surrounding the Metro stations lies with the respective civic agency.
