The Delhi government on Saturday suspended a caretaker at Asha Kiran, a government observatory for the mentally challanged, for allegedly beating five inmates with a wooden stick.
The condition of three inmates is said to be serious. All the five inmates are being treated at Asha Kiran's own hospital inside the home's premises in Rohini.
According to an observatory home official, the incident took place on Thursday night. Sushil Kumar, one of the caretakers, spotted five children in the adult's room.
“This infuriated Kumar and he got a wooden stick and started beating the poor kids brutally. While two kids escaped with minor injuries, five got serious injuries on their back, legs and even face,” an official told HT requesting anonymity.
The official added that rules prohibit even a wooden stick inside the observatory home's premises.
The incident came to the light only on Saturday morning. Three seriously injured children have been identified as Aneesh, Dinesh and Kishan.
"It is indeed a serious offence. I have suspended the caretaker and initiated the proceedings to terminate him," said Asha Kiran's administrator TC Nakh.
Meanwhile, the NGOs giving their services at the observatory home have also filed a complaint against the caretaker with the police.
Asha Kiran is the only government run observatory home for the mentally challenged in Delhi. It has been in news several times for a spate of deaths.
In August this year, two inmates have reportedly died due to illness.
