An “emotionally unstable” man allegedly hammered his 58-year-old father to death and critically injured his mother before smashing his own head with a pestle at his east Delhi’s Krishna Nagar residence on early Tuesday morning.
According to the police, the incident took place around 3am and the hammering continued till 6am until the father, Harnam Singh Dhingra, lost his life and the mother, Kailash Rani, 55, fell consciousness. The incident came to light at 8.45am after a neighbour heard Rani screaming for help.
A police team reached the spot, broke opened the main door of the house — which the accused had bolted from inside — and rushed them to Dr Hedgewar Aarogya Sansthan. While the father was declared dead on arrival, Rani and the accused, Chandra Mohan Dhingra, 33, are recuperating at the hospital.
Prabhakar, deputy commissioner of police (east) said that Chandra Mohan tried to smash his own head using the same pestle and in the process inflicted a serious wound.
“On the basis of Rani’s statement in which she accused her son for killing her husband, a case of murder has been registered against Chandra Mohan. He will be arrested once he is discharged from the hospital,” said Prabhakar.
Rani in her statement told the police that she was sleeping in her bedroom when she heard her husband screaming from a different room. “She went inside his bedroom and found her son attacking her husband. She tried to stop him and in the process suffered a serious injury on her head. She lost her consciousness and regained it around 8am only to find her husband lying dead in a pool of blood,” said the officer, adding that Chandra Mohan has confessed to his crime.
Dr Ashok Dua, chief casualty medical officer at Dr Hedgewar Aarogya Sansthan, said, “All three patients had serious head injuries. Harnam was dead when he was brought here. Rani’s condition is critical while Chandra Mohan is out of danger.”
According to the relatives, Chandra Mohan has been mentally unstable for the last 15 years and used to torture and beat his parents frequently. Around two years ago, Chandra Mohan was sent behind bars for five days after the police arrested him for thrashing his parents, Charanjeet, Rani’s brother said.
“Mohan is not mentally sound and that is why he is still unmarried and unemployed. It was his parents who were taking care of his needs. My brother-in-law used to deal in real estate. But for the past four months, he was at home, taking rest after a heart surgery,” said Charanjeet, adding that Chandra Mohan’s parents had opened a garment shop in Ram Nagar area for him which he failed to run.
