A portion of Aurobindo Marg near Green Park, below which work for the Metro Rail is on, caved in early on Sunday.
The “settlement” (as Metro officials called it) — spread over 250 metres — occurred at 6.30 am reportedly after a storm water drain below the road was damaged due to overnight rains, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said.
“The storm water drain is just above an under-construction Metro tunnel. The damaged drain started leaking out the slush to the tunnel below, which led to the settlement,” DMRC chief spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.
The damaged portion of the road has been barricaded and excavated for restoration. Repairs will be carried out round the clock till it is completed. “The road stretch is expected to be opened to traffic by Tuesday morning,” he said.
Commuters coming from IIT towards AIIMS will be diverted through Green Park market road. Vehicles coming from the IIT side are being diverted from the Green Park mosque point and they can come back on the Aurobindo Marg through a road next to Hotel Parkland. Traffic movement is normal on the other side of the Aurobindo Marg from AIIMS to IIT.
DMRC managing director E. Sreedharan also inspected the spot.
