The body of a 33-year-old man, who was reported missing on Saturday, was recovered from an open drain in northwest Delhi’s Mahendra Park area on Sunday morning.
“The man has been identified as Pyarelal, a resident of Jahangirpuri’s A block. He had gone missing after he left his house last evening. We were intimated about the incident by locals who found his body floating in the drain on Sunday,” said a senior police officer.
Though the police believe the victim was heavily drunk and probably died after accidentally falling in the drain and drowning, his family claimed he was killed for resisting a robbery attempt.
“A police team reached the spot immediately after the PCR call was received on Sunday morning and took the body to Babu Jagjivan Ram hospital where doctors attributed his death to drowning,” the officer said.
“However, his family claims that he was killed for resisting a robbery bid as a gold ring that he used to wear in his hand and his mobile phone were missing,” he added.
“He lived with his maternal uncle, who is a goldsmith. He used to work at his uncle’s shop. We have registered a case at the Mahendra Park police station and further investigation is underway,” the officer added.
