The Congress on Sunday sharpened its attack on the BJP election campaign committee chairman and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, saying he was making malicious remarks and wanted to become a “Rambo” in Uttarakhand.
Stung by his statement on the beheading of Indian soldiers, Congress newly appointed chairman of its communication department Ajay Maken said Modi’s remarks could demotivate the armed forces which are pursuing relief operations in flood-hit Uttarakhand.
“People of this country are keenly watching how personal ambitions of a politician in Narendra Modi can make him use such words which would demotivate our armed forces and mar relief operations,” Maken said in response to Modi’s remarks at a rally in Pathankot.
Modi had sought the Prime Minister’s explanation on why his government treated the then Pakistani prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf to a lavish lunch in Jaipur weeks after Indian soldiers were beheaded by Pakistanis near the LoC.
Maken said Modi’s remarks were “unfortunate and malicious to say the least” in such difficult times of natural calamities in neighbouring states.
Charging Modi with politicising the natural calamity in the hill state, Maken’s colleague and information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said he made a “tourist detour” of affected areas.
Tewari said various government agencies involved in relief and rehabilitation work had evacuated 10,000 people on Saturday.
“Now in all this, if somebody wants to become a Rambo and claim that he alone in a span of two days during a trip of disaster tourism brought out 15,000 people, I am afraid for the lack of a better word, it just reflects rank opportunism,” he said.
“They had to go to Pathankot so they make a tourist detour via Uttarakhand and then started claiming, that solo, they were able to rescue 15,000 people,” Tewari said referring to Modi.
