With eight days still remaining, rainfall in Delhi in August this year has breached a 10-year record, the weatherman said on Monday.
At 407.1 mm (at the Safdarjung station), the rainfall has been 116 per cent above what is normal for this time of the year.
The all-time-high record was set in 1961, when the capital received 583.3 mm of rainfall.
"This is the highest rainfall in 10 years. Though rainfall is usually high in August, this year it has been very high," said B.P. Yadav, director, Weather Forecast, Meteorological Department.
The city has been receiving continuous rainfall for the last five days. The Yamuna river, meanwhile, continued to flow above the danger mark of 204.8 metres. On Monday, the river was flowing at 205.26 meters, 42 centimetres above the danger mark. The water level may rise during the week.
"The water level is expected to reach 205.65 meters on Tuesday afternoon. Thereafter, the level will rise further. Haryana released an additional 2 lakh cusecs of water on Monday morning and the water level will remain high during the coming week," said Ish Kumar, chief engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Department.
At various places, such as Yamuna Bazar, Kartar Nagar and Sonia Vihar, rickshaws and agricultural land has been submerged. "Around 25 rickshaws have been under water since Saturday night. We have no idea what to expect once the waters recede," said Dharmendra Kumar, 35, a rickshaw puller at Yamuna Bazar.
People living close to the river-bank have been evacuated and shifted to camps set up in safer areas. "We have set up 159 tents, which are currently holding 916 evacuated people, from low lying areas such as Usmanpur, Okhla, Chillat and Jagatpur," Kumar added.
The spike in rainfall in the city has been witnessed since August 19. Before that, the city had just recorded only 125.1 mm of rainfall during the month.
The Met office has predicted a generally cloudy sky with a few spells of rain or thundershowers for Tuesday.
