NEW DELHI: Four different groups of African nationals were attacked by residents of three villages in Chattarpur area of south Delhi between 9pm and midnight on Thursday. The victims were going home.
Six African nationals said they were racially abused by the residents of Maidangarhi and Rajpur Khurd villages. Police registered four separate FIRs and said the attacks were not planned.
The attacks on the African youths, mostly from Nigeria, come less than a week after a 23-year-old Congo national was stoned to death by three men in Kishangarh village near Vasant Kunj.
The victims have planned a protest march at Jantar Mantar on Tuesday.
The police said the locals and the foreigners clashed over a different reason in each case. But one of the victims, Kenneth Igbiniosa, 26, alleged he was attacked without any provocation.
Kenneth, a musician, who works at the Christ Consulate Church, said ar med locals stopped his car around 10.30pm on Thursday. He was returning home with his wife Kate and four-year-old daughter.
“I saw around 15-20 people ar med with baseball bats, stumps, and rods. The minute I stopped my car, someone broke the windshield of my car. They hit me with bats and abused me. Fortunately, my wife was not hurt. We sped away and approached the police,” he said.
Kenneth has serious injuries on his right elbow and shoulder. Another victim, Lucky, 32, was attacked in Maidangarhi within 50m of the spot, where Kenneth was attacked. He has a deep cut on his nose.
Jason, who is assisting the victims, has planned Tuesday’s protest. “Even women were attacked that day. All Africans, who passed through the villages that night, were attacked. A woman was rushed to AIIMS. Should we start carrying weapons for our safety? We want answers this time,” he said.
DCP (south) Ishwar Singh, said, “Let me clarify that the attacks were not planned. In one case there was a clash over some Africans playing loud music. In another, African nationals drinking in a public place had caused a minor scuffle with the locals. None of the victims agreed to file a complaint.
“No African national was seriously injured, except Lucky, who received minor injuries on his nose. He was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre and discharged immediately. We registered the FIRs on our own and have been conducting raids.”
The police are yet to arrest anyone but have detained many villagers.
The villagers refused to name any of the youths involved in the attack. A local, who did not wish to be named, said all Africans passing through the village that night were chased by the villagers. “I saw many Africans running in fear,” he said.
All villagers HT spoke to had different stories to tell. Some accused one of the Africans youths of molesting a child. Another said there was a tiff between an auto-rickshaw driver and few African youths, who were drinking in public. The police on Friday met the villagers and the African nationals residing in the area.
