A mother daughter duo drowned when their car plunged into a canal in outer Delhi’s Bawana area on Sunday night, the police said.
According to police, the incident took place when Manju Kumari (24), her daughter three year old Isha and husband Amit Kumar (27) were on their way to their Daryapur village residence after watching a movie at Narela.
“The incident was reported at 9 pm from near the Hanuman Temple on the Bawana Road,” said a senior police officer from the investigation team.
Police said that the accident happened when Amit attempted to avoid a head on collision with another vehicle approaching from the opposite side.
“According to Rajender, he lost control of his Maruti Esteem car after he was temporarily blinded by the high beam of another vehicle that was coming from the opposite carriageway on the narrow road,” said the police officer.
The police said that Amit took a sudden turn to his left, failed to realise that his car was heading over the edge and plunged 10 feet below into the adjoining canal.
While Amit managed to swim and save himself, his wife and daughter could not.
“Amit swam to safety and screamed for help, locals reached the spot and attempted to locate the woman and child with the help of flash lights so that they could be saved but to no avail,” the officer said.
A rescue team consisting of officials from the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) and officers from the local police station had to struggle through the night to fish out the bodies of both victims.
“While Manju’s body was taken out from the canal at around 4 am, the child’s body could only be fished
out late six hours later. The car was taken out from the canal using a crane,” said the officer.
DCP (outer) Chhaya Sharma said, “Though no case has been registered, proceedings under section 174 have been initiated to get the post mortem of both victims done.”
