Harish Rai (25) was on his way to office this Friday morning, but unfortunately for him, the traffic police had other plans.
A Delhi Traffic Police crane sent the Sewa Nagar resident to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre instead.
The arm of the crane, which was hanging below the permissible safe limit, suddenly swung upwards and hit the iron bars above Moolchand underpass.
The crane’s hook got entangled in the structure and uprooted it.
The railing fell on the roof of a Haryana Roadways bus that was about to enter the underpass. Rai, whose motorcycle was parallel to the bus, lost his balance and fell down as the bus swerved.
The bus was damaged as well.
The incident took place around seven in the morning.
“The iron bars were dislodged after the crane crashed into it. It fell on the bus passing through
the underpass, said a senior police officer on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
“Had the bus not been there, a major tragedy could have taken place. The railing could have fallen directly on the motorcyclist, who miraculously escaped with few injuries,” the officer added.
Traffic was thrown out of gear and the entire Ring Road stretch was caught in a massive traffic jam for about five hours.
The railing kept lying on the road for about three hours.
“The railing was cleared later, till then the traffic was thrown out of gear,” said the officer.
“The entire south Delhi stretch of the Ring Road was choc-a-bloc. Morning commuters had a harried time,” the officer said.
Police said they have arrested the crane driver identified as constable Om Prakash.
The incident was reported around half past seven.
“The crane was on its way to Lajpat Nagar. Its arm and the hook were hanging below the permissible safe level all this while,” the officer explained.
“When it reached the Moolchand underpass, the arm suddenly swung and the hook hit the grill of the flyover, breaking it,” the officer said.
Rai is recuperating at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
