In the wake of a fresh row over the Mullaperiyar Dam between his state and Tamilnadu, Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy on Friday met PM Manmohan Singh seeking a solution to the issue.
The meeting comes a day after the PM conveyed to the Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa that nothing should be said or done to create "undue alarm".
Kerala has been expressing fears about the weakness of the 116-year-old dam, which it said had increased after the area around the site shook by 26 tremors in the last five months alone. Tamil Nadu has accused Kerala of whipping up a 'fear psychosis'.
"The prime minister directed me to meet water resources minister Pawan Bansal for further discussions," Chandy told the media.
The Kerala CM had also met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi earlier in the day to brief her about Kerala's position on the issue. Chandy also met the Kerala MPs who have been protesting in Parliament from last few days, against the dam.
Earlier, Chandy, had written to Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa seeking a reduction in the water level in the reservoir to 120 feet as an immediate step to remove the fears of lakhs of people living close to the dam.
