The two men, who allegedly stabbed a 19-yearold student to death after she resisted a molestation attempt, had threatened to disfigure the victim’s face by throwing acid on her. The men had been reportedly harassing the woman for the past two years, a complaint regarding which was filed in the local police station in October 2013.
The police, however, did not register a criminal case and detained Shashi Bala, the mother of the two accused — Sunny Jai Prakash and Ajay — for preventive action. She was later let off after she provided a security bond and an undertaking promising good conduct.
While the family of the deceased girl claimed that the men had been stalking her and had attacked her on several occasions, the police said that they used to have fights on trivial matters and there was no complaint of molestation received by them.
“The relations between the woman’s family and the men had been strained for a long time. They often indulged in fighting with each other over petty issues. There was no complaint of stalking or molestation made to us earlier. Due action was taken in the complaint that was made to us in October 2013,” police said.
Countering the police’s claim, the deceased’s relatives told HT that they had approached the police on several occasions and told the cops that their daughter was being threatened and abused, but no action was taken.
Speaking to HT, the woman’s relative said the two men often hurled stones at her and passed lewd comments whenever she used to walk past the area. “Whenever the two men used to spot her in the area they used to throw stones at her and abuse her. They used to say nasty things and even spat on her. After the woman complained to her parents about the men harassing her, her mother approached the police but the men were not put behind bars. We were told that Sunny went to jail but he came out within 15 days and he started harassing her again. The 2013 case is still pending in Tis Hazari court.”
The family also alleged that despite bringing the threats to police’s knowledge, no security was provided and no attempt was made to keep
the men behind bars.
“The men used to threaten the 19-year-old openly, yet no one did anything. She was courageous enough to go and report the matter to the police, but nothing was done about it, which is why she is no more today. They used to threaten to kill her and they did,” a relative of the girl said. She added, “Why did the police not register a criminal case against the goons and put them behind bars?”
