A 25-year-old civil services aspirant allegedly committed suicide under mysterious circumstances in east Delhi's Mandawali area on Sunday night.
Saurav Aggarwal, a qualified electronics engineer who had recently quit his job with a Noida-based company to prepare for the civil services examination, was found dead below the rented flat in which he used to live with his law graduate girlfriend's accommodation at Pandav Nagar D-block.
Aggarwal and his 22-year-old girlfriend, both of whom hail from Ranchi and had studied together till class ten, had taken up the third floor flat on rent, below which the police found him lying in a pool of blood around at 12:55am on Monday morning.
They had taken the flat on rent after introducing themselves as a married couple to their landlord some four months ago.
"While a postmortem examination is yet to be performed on the victim, we have sought forensic opinion — basically about the precise nature and tangent of the fall — in the case and are investigating it from all plausible and possible angles," said Prabhakar, DCP (east).
As they await Aggarwal's autopsy report, inquest proceedings, based on the statement of his girlfriend who happens to the lone witness to the incident, have been initiated in the matter.
According to the statement she gave to the police, the incident followed a brief heated exchange of words and altercation between the couple sometime after 10:30pm on the fateful night when she, employed at a Noida-based company's legal department, returned home from a party.
"She saw him drinking beer on the terrace and the couple had an argument which soon turned into a fight during which Saurav, according to the woman, slapped her twice and sent her to a room located a storey below the terrace," said an investigating officer.
Seconds later, the girl told the police, she heard a loud thud from the street and saw Saurav lying in a pool of blood.
Saurav, who came to the Capital in late 2010, used to stay at his own rented house in south Delhi's Katwaria Sarai and used to visit his girlfriend at least once a week.
"Seemingly shocked when she saw Saurav lying limp on the street, the girl panicked and called an ambulance. When it didn't turn up, she called one of her colleagues who reached the spot and informed us around 12:55 am," the police officer said.
