NDMC yet to implement revised parking rates

Despite a council decision in a meeting in April to hike parking charges in its jurisdiction from July 1, the civic agency is yet to implement it. According to officials, it will take more than a month to have the new rates in place after the tendering process starts.
"It will take a couple of months more for the new parking rates to be effectively implemented. The tenders were floated on Monday and the process should be completed soon," a senior NDMC official told Hindustan Times, adding that a lot of time-consuming technicalities are involved which tended to the delay in implementation of the revised parking rates.
Vehicle owners can breathe a sigh of relief for now as it will still take some time to have the earlier rates of R10 for first two hours replaced by R20 for the first hour and subsequently R20 for each hour and so on.
According to sources, the revised rates, which were discussed in a special meeting chaired by Delhi government chief secretary in October last year, are in a bid to promote its multi-level parking projects. "The multi-level parking lots will be used only when the tariff of surface level parking is increased," said a corporation official.
The NDMC has two automated multi-level parking lots in Sarojini Nagar and Baba Kharak Singh Marg. Two more projects at Khan Market and Kali Bari Marg, which were proposed in last year's budget, are yet to see the light of day as the civic agency has not got the required land as yet. And the Kasturba Gandhi Marg parking project is yet to get clearance from the National Monument Authority.
The civic body in its jurisdiction has 53 parking sites, of which 13 were allotted on Bhagidari basis to various institutions and government offices. The remaining 41 parking lots were divided into five groups, which were allotted through tenders.
