The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry is expected to soon appoint a new chairperson of Central Board of Secondary Education and also a new Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University.
A selection panel headed by former University Grants Commission (UGC) chairperson Yashpal reportedly submitted a panel of six names for the post of Jamia V-C, including the incumbent, Professor Mushirul Hasan, to HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday.
The other names include Bihar Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah, an officer of all India elite services Najib Jung, a Bihar-based educationist Shakeel Ahmad, a Delhi-based sociologist Faizan Ahmed and Khawaja Khalid.
Although the selection panel was expected to give three names, a member, on condition of anonymity, said, six names had been submitted so that the government had a wider pool of persons to choose from.
HRD ministry officials, however, said the panel of names would be forwarded to President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, who is Visitor of Jamia, a Central University.
The President is the appointing authority of Vice-Chancellors of all Central Universities.
On the other hand, the Department of Personnel and Training has sought Sibal’s approval to appoint the chairperson of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the country’s premier school education regulatory body.
Former HRD minister Arjun Singh had recommended Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS official Pragya Srivastava, who is presently posted as Joint Commissioner with Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, as chairperson of CBSE. But, her appointment was withheld as the election code of conduct was in force.
Even though Sibal can change Singh’s decision, ministry officials considered Srivastava a front-runner.
The HRD ministry had given officiating charge of chairperson to secretary Vineet Joshi when the term of former chairperson Ashok Ganguly ended in 2008.
Ministry officials said both appointments would be announced soon without giving a timeframe.
