A furious gun-battle six years ago has returned to haunt the Delhi Police’s special cell. The police had allegedly killed an interstate gang of criminals in the encounter.
On directions from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Vijay Dev, Delhi’s District Magistrate (DM), is conducting a magisterial inquiry into the circumstances which led to the encounter on May 5, 2006. “The DM visited the spot where the encounter had taken place and the officers, who were part of that team, recreated the incident on Saturday," Delhi Police sources said.
That fateful evening, the Ayub gang comprising five men, identified as Sanjay, Aslam, Manoj, Shahzad and their leader Ayub, were gunned down after being intercepted while travelling in a white Tata Sumo with a UP number around 10:45pm near Tronica City in Sonia Vihar.
The gang allegedly had more than 50 criminal cases registered against them across Delhi and UP. They were killed after they allegedly opened fire on the police party.
The police team included an Assistant Commissioner (ACP), an inspector, 13 sub-inspectors, seven ASIs, 13 head constables, and 10 constables.
Sources said the magisterial inquiry was initiated after Sanjay’s widow Prabha and Aslam’s father Javed Ahmed approached the NHRC, claiming the encounter was a fake one, and an inquiry was ordered in September 2010.
The NHRC’s initial observations, sources claim, state that there is no forensic evidence to prove that the five country-made arms and one grenade recovered from the five men, according to the police, actually belonged to them.
“We did nothing wrong,” said a senior officer from the team. “They even used to rape the women of the house after robbing it. We have submitted their swabs as well as their fingerprints as evidence.”
