A Nigerian and a former woman employee of Tata Sky have been arrested for allegedly duping a Mumbai businessman.
The accused contacted the businessman through e-mail saying he had won a lottery of US $ 850,000. They gave him “black notes” and asked him to give them Rs 2 lakh to buy a special chemical that would turn the notes into US dollars.
The accused have been identified as Chima John Kenneth (28) and Nirupama Tiwari (32). While Kenneth posed as a diplomat, his girlfriend posed as a customs official.
Tiwari had recently left her job because she wanted to marry Kenneth. She was drawing a salary of Rs 40,000 per month.
Police said Mumbai businessman Shailesh Singh contacted them earlier this month.
Neeraj Thakur, DCP (crime), said, “The Nigerian sent an e-mail in the name of one Dr Martin Pedro to Singh. On October 5 he contacted Singh stating that he had won US $ 850,000 for the New Year Season 2008 prize promotion, organised by Webmaster Inc. in the Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL Award.”
A few days later Singh received a mail from one Tony Alexander informing him that a diplomat will deliver the money and he has to pay US $ 950 towards the Indian Airport Authority Charges
“The accused asked for Rs 2 lakh for custom duty and gave him a bag containing black notes. When Singh raised doubts he was asked to pay another Rs 1.25 lakh to purchase a chemical that would cleanse the notes,” the DCP said.
