With the directorate of education saying there won’t be many changes in the guidelines for nursery admission other than the time frame, schools are looking at implementing a points system similar to the last year.

The points system for nursery admission in schools is expected to remain the same this year as well.

Weightage to distance, alumni and sibling are expected to dominate the points table this year as well. "We have been taking into account the directions of the HC and the directorate of education when it comes to the points system and have not gone wrong so far. This years’ points system will be more or less the same," said Ameeta Wattal, principal, Springdales, Pusa Road.

The school has given points for sibling (30), alumni parents (25), distance (20), minority criteria (5), girl child (5) and transfer cases (5) last year. Most other schools had similar points systems.

“There is no better mechanism to conduct the admissions fairly and we will be sticking to the points system,” said RC Jain, Delhi State Public Schools Management Association.

But for parents who have not studied in Delhi this is bad news.

“Giving so many points for alumni is a death blow to us. Both my wife and I are from towns in Uttar Pradesh and are, therefore, disqualified from taking admission in most top schools,” said Abhinav Rana, a legal consultant in a private firm.

“Alumni mean individuals who have studied in the school, usually till class 10 or 12. The RTE says no points can be given on basis of education of parents,” said Sumit Vohra, founder, admissionsnursery.com.
