NDA’s working chairman LK Advani on Thursday ruled out a no-confidence motion against the government on the issue of corruption in the 2G spectrum allocation. But the opposition won’t go back on the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the scam, he said.
Advani accused the government of provoking the opposition to bring a no-confidence motion just a year after the Lok Sabha polls. “We have no such plans and every MP wants to serve the full term.”
Besides, Advani said, he was for a fixed term for legislatures and had met the Prime Minister and Leader of Lok Sabha in this regard. “But the UPA government was indifferent to the problem of corruption,” Advani said.
Flanked by leaders of opposition Sushma Swaraj (Lok Sabha) and Arun Jaitley (Rajya Sabha) and those from Shiv Sena and Akali Dal, Advani said, the government had not been able to convince anyone in the opposition why a JPC was not needed.
Advani said he was not underrating the PAC which can perform its job. “The scams undermining the democratic system are, however, multi-dimensional that cannot come under the PAC’s purview.”
He alleged the UPA government diminished all institutions, be it CBI or CVC that were responsible for investigations by eroding their autonomy and independence. He said, the NDA would launch public rallies and meetings all over India against the UPA’s “corruption.”
Advani said the opposition was no longer interested in merely “talking” about the issue and wanted action. “We had to resort to an extraordinary step of a parliamentary stalemate when scam after scam were being pushed under the carpet by the government.”
On corruption in BJP-ruled Karnataka, he said, “we are dealing with it and are confident that we will deal with it...” Reacting to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s remark that her party was acting against corrupt while the BJP was silent, he said, “What can we do when we do not have so many corrupt people?”
