North Delhi Municipal Corporation's efforts to increase tax revenues and bringing more people under tax net have finally paid off.
In the first quarter of the current financial year, the number of tax payers to the civic body has increased from 2.7 lakh in 2011 to 3.24 lakh.
The online system for depositing property tax is also becoming popular among the residents of the municipal body with 1.83 lakh choosing to pay taxes online.
Last year, 1.33 lakh people had opted for the online facility in the period between April to August.
A zone-wise break-up of the tax collection shows that the maximum number of online tax payers belonged to the Rohini zone followed by Karol Bagh and Civil Line zones.
While 92,138 people paid their property tax online in Rohini zone, the figures in Karol Bagh and Civil Line stood at 34,508 and 29,060 respectively.
Deputy chairman of standing committee VP Pandey said the report suggests that more and more people were availing the online facility initiated by the civic body as they don't have to visit offices and stand in long queues.
He said the civic body has this year collected over R223 crore in property tax and transfer duty as against the budget target of R652 crore for the financial year 2012-13.
