Nursery hunt begins for kids who missed the bus last year

Last year's nursery admission season spelt disappointment for Amandeep Chawla (name changed), whose daughter did not make it to a school in Delhi. So Chawla decided to let his daughter continue in the playschool instead of opting for a school in NCR.
This year, however, he is all set to apply for admission in kindergarten (KG) in Delhi schools. This route is slowly becoming an alternative for parents whose children do not get admission in nursery classes.
"I had the option of admitting my child in an NCR school, but I decided not to. Instead, my daughter continued to go to the the playschool in Greater Kailash. The class consists of just 15 children, every child is paid equal attention. This year, I will try for her admission in KG in some schools in the city," said Chawla.
Some schools are of the opinion that KG classes have more seats and hence, can accommodate students who seek admission.
"If a parent comes the following year, and says that they had applied the previous year, we always consider their case for admission in the prep (KG) class. This is usually bigger than nursery. There are more seats and the parents deserve a chance," said Jyoti Bose, principal, Springdales School (Dhaula Kuan).
Yet, schools also said that it is risky for parents to wait to seek admission in KG, since getting a seat depends on vacancies and schools' policies.
"Some schools do give admission in KG classes. But it is a risk that parents take. A few schools do not have the policy of taking students in KG," said Usha Ram, principal, Laxman Public School.
While NCR schools have become a safer bet for parents, letting a child continue in a playschool to seek admission in KG may not altogether be a prudent decision.
"Parents whose children did not get admission in nursery last year will have a tough time getting admission in KG this year. Many parents put their children into playschools or in NCR schools in the hope of changing schools the following year," said Sumit Vohra, from www.admissionsnursery.com.
