Delhiites are on waiting lists for years to acquire one of these hot properties, known for good construction with key amenities at prime localities, which come cheap as well. But the recent crumbling and decaying have put residents of these flats, which are less than 15 years old, in danger.
“Last week, I was saved by a whisker as a big portion of my roof’s centre piece and plaster containing rusted iron pieces fell down on my microwave oven, a few seconds after I moved away. These flats are considered to be prime property and were constructed under the self financing scheme,” said Jitendra Bakshi, a resident of the DDA SFS Flats, Sector-13, Metroview Apartments, Dwarka, Phase-II.
Bakshi has lodged a complaint with the authority and is waiting for the body to fix the damage.
“Cracks have developed in my top floor apartment after the incident. In my son’s room, several cracks have appeared and I am very scared now. We are ready to relocate to some other place for a month if DDA decides to fix our home. It is not just me, people in the area are having similar problems,” he said.
In another home in Dwarka Sector 13B, pieces of the balcony have been breaking off and falling on the cars parked below.
“There are children playing in the streets below. What if something falls on their heads? Who will be responsible then? We complained to DDA and realised that the authority had received many similar complaints. This is dangerous and needs to be looked into. What kind of construction quality is this?” said Kavita Singh, a resident. The problem, however, is not restricted to Sector 13.
There have been several reports of balconies falling off in many houses in Dwarka’s Sector 1.
Meanwhile, a DDA official said they were looking into the complaints. “Each case will be looked at individually and a decision will be taken accordingly,” he said.
