The two elephants, touring the North Campus, were roped in by the World Lung Foundation. The first day went off smoothly in all colleges with the police and college authorities making rounds to check any incidents of ragging. Policemen patrolled the campuses on foot and motorcycles to check harassment of freshers and also conducted surprise checks in buses.

“I was a little nervous but we have had no interaction with our seniors so far, hence no ragging,” said Utkarsh Jain, a fresher at Hindu College.

Many colleges, such as Gargi College , Hansraj College and Miranda House conducted orientations on Wednesday as well.

"We held department orientations on Wednesday to acclimatise students. We also held an ice breaking session," said Kanika Khandelwal, media representative, Lady Shri Ram College.

"The first day was great. The teachers and seniors were very supportive and told us about the classes and the syllabi," said Deepesh Chawla, a student of B Com (Honours) at Ramjas College.

“Everything went off smoothly and no instances of ragging were reported from the college,” said V K Kwatra, principal, Hansraj College.

Science students, meanwhile, were a little unsettled by the uncertainty over the implementation of the semester system. “We don’t know whether there will be an implementation of the semester system or not. We have not got the time table as yet,” said Dharna Pahuja, who took admission in Chemistry (Honours) at Hansraj College.

Many colleges have prepared their science time tables according to the semester system. A big dampener to the freshers' spirit was the traffic snarls in North Campus. The rubble on the roads and two gaping potholes in the middle of the road brought the traffic to a standstill.
