One labourer was killed and five severely injured when part of an under-construction building collapsed in south Delhi’s posh New Friends Colony on Friday morning. The men were digging out soil to construct the residential building’s basement when the ground caved in. A police patrol heard their cries for help.
“We were patrolling the area when we heard the labourers shout for help. We rushed to the site and saw that a portion of the building had collapsed. We immediately enlisted the help of the fire department. It took us more than ten minutes to pull out five men who were buried up to their waist. It was then we noticed that a labourer had been buried completely. We pulled him out too but it was too late,” a senior police officer said.
The police registered a case of negligence against unknown persons but an official of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation said no building norms were violated at the site. “The soil on one side of the under-construction basement loosened and the structure collapsed. The building plan of this property was sanctioned on April 16 and the construction was going on as per the sanctioned plan. No violation was noticed, hence, there is no action required on part of the SDMC,” the official said.
The deceased was identified as Badri and the injured -- Maakhan, Prem Devi, Chandra Pal, Bhupender and Santosh – were recuperating at the AIIMS Trauma Center.
The land on which the house was being constructed belonged to Ravi Agarwal, a businessman. He was contacted by the police, who said they would also speak to the contractor.
