approved, the PWD will invite tenders from construction companies.

Conceived in 2008, the project includes construction of seven flyovers and an underpass to make the 17-kilometre stretch of outer ring road — from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad — signal-free. The project is likely to cost about R2,200 crore.

To be taken up in parts, the engineer said that the project would be the first and the biggest project taken up by the PWD after the constructed of flyovers during the CWG.

Senior PWD officials said the project was sent to the DUAC — the agency responsible for preserving, developing and maintaining the aesthetic quality or urban and environmental design in Delhi — in 2010.

Officials said the agency had approved the proposal with some observations paving the way for fast-tracking the project.

The Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) — a technical body that approves all infrastructure projects — has already approved the proposal.

According to PWD engineers, the project includes construction of three elevated roads of more than two-kilometres each, four flyovers and an underpass.

“There will be a 2.1km elevated road between Vikaspuri and Keshopur Mandi followed by a small flyover at Meera Bagh and then an underpass at Deepali Chowk. Then there will be a 2.5km elevated road from Saraswati Chowk to Mangolpuri and a 2.3km long elevated road between Badli and Pitampura. We have also proposed construction of flyovers at Bhalaswa Crossing, Mukundpur and Burari crossing,” said a senior PWD engineer.

According to engineers, some stretches of this part of outer ring road witness very heavy traffic movement and require immediate decongestion.

Engineers said outer ring road in west Delhi caters to almost two times the number of vehicles than its capacity. The construction of flyovers will add to the vehicular carrying capacity of the road.
