With the semester-end exams of Delhi University coming up in April, the State Election Commission will keep a close watch on the use of loudspeakers in residential areas during the campaigning season.
The commission has set a 10pm deadline, and warned of strict action against violators. Not only this, the use of loudspeakers will be allowed only after permission is sought from the competent authority."Putting up hoardings, banners, buntings and posters for the polls is banned. Also, use of loudspeakers is allowed only from 7am to 10pm," said Rakesh Mehta, State Election Commissioner, Delhi.
According to sources, even though the commission has increased the expenditure limit from R1.5 lakh to R4 lakh, only three vehicles will be allowed for campaigning.
“In case of any violation, the vehicles will be impounded. If candidates continue the violation, they can be issued notices too,” said a senior official from the commission.
The Delhi Election Commi-ssion has called a high-level co-ordination meeting on Thursday, in which officials from Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Police, Delhi government, and other agencies will discuss the modalities of the model code of conduct and how it will be implemented.
“If we get to know about any violation we will register a case and arrest the accused if required. A separate election cell, headed by DCP, has been formed to look into matters related to the polls,” said a senior police officer.
